The 6-10, 228-pound center-forward was described by USC assistant cage coach Mike Hefner as having a soft touch from 17 feet in.

"John made the all-star team at the Aloha Classic in Ilawaii earlier this year. lIe i is a very intelligent player and has been awarded a NCAA postgraduate scholarship. lle's played some forward for us because of his quickness and both the low 7. That was the reaction Thursday from State guard Ted Hathaway after learning he was choser.

in the third round of the National Basketball Asso- HATHAWAY ciation draft by the Cavs. Hathaway, a 24 year -old native of Middletown, only played 14 varsity basketball games for coach Ray Dieringer at Cleveland State during his junior and senior seasons. His eligibility twice was curtailed scholastic difficulties. Hathaway, a 6-3 transfer from Middlesex (Conn.) Junior' College. averaged 17.8 points per game in six games as a senior and 23.6 in eight contests as a junior.

4 An Often called "Teddy Ballgame" for his exciting outside shooting. Hathaway figured he would go early in the draft. He cited national exposure he received by playing in the Aloha Classic in Honolulu and in a recent scrimmage of 29 college seniors in Cincinnati. That scrimmage. was conducted at the Jewish Community Center in Cincinnati by Hathaway's agent Ron Grinker.

It attracted many BA and BA officials including 'Cavaliers general managercoach Bill Fitch and the Boston Celtics brain trust of Red Auerbach and Tommy Heinsohn. OPINION Trade for Lambert was a good one By Bill Nichols Bill Fitch did it again. For the third straight year he pulled off a blockbuster trade just prior to the college draft. First he obtained Jim Brewer and then Jim Chones. His third deal brings Southern Cal's John Lambert to the Cavaliers and sends Dwight Davis to the Golden State If Lambert makes a contribution next season or the one after Fitch will have a bonus, but just as important is the departure of Davis. The trade was the best thing that could happen to Davis, who had no future in Cleveland since Jim Brewer replaced him as the starting strong forward late this past NICHOLS season.

Davis had three seasons to prove himself in Cleveland and never lived up to expectations. He was capable of playing a fantastic basketball game, but just as capable of making some of the most bizarre turnovers. In short, Dwight was not consistent. Davis talked often of wanting more playing time and with the emergence of Brewer his minutes would be reduced drastically. Dwight is an outstanding individual, but very high strung and will have to make a great adjustment with the Warriors.

He will fill a backup role on his new team and he just may not have the temperment for it. To many 1 hereabouts, Lambert, a 6-10 forward-center from Southern California, is an unknown quantity, but Fitch is high on his speed, hands and intelligence. Although Lambert was not considered a college blue chipper, it's difficult to fault Fitch for his selection. The Cavs boss has yet to miss on a first round selection. However, it was surprising that 'he didn't a guard in the first round when you consider the questionable status of backcourter Austin Carr, who underwent knee surgery Thursday.

Fitch selected five guards in the draft, but he didn't pick a backcourter until the third selection, Mel Utley of St. John's of New York. Look for Fitch to make a trade for a veteran guard before camp opens in September. He needs another proven performer for insurance, if nothing else. If Carr is healthy, then, of course, the Cavs will be in good shape with the former Notre Dame star, Jimmy Cleamons, Dick Snyder and Foots Walker, but if not, they will need another guard.

With Davis gone, Lambert, second pick Dan Roundfield of Central Michigan and second- nd-year player Campy Russell will back up Brewer at the strong forward. Russell also will get the opportunity to unseat Bingo Smith at the quick forward, which gives Fitch maneuverability in the front court. The questions are posed at guard, unless Carr comes all the way back. and high post," said Hefner, Lambert averaged 14.2 points a game this past season and has a 9.9 averaged for his career at USC. Ile grabbed 266 rebounds last year.

His seasonal highs were 29 points and 16 rebounds. Lambert connected on 55.7 per cent of his shots last season for a school record. Many of his points came off of tip-ins and offensive rebounds. His speed allows him to fill the lane on the fast break and he was an integral part of USC's pressure defense. Dan Roundfield, 6-8, 205- pounder, was the Cavs first of two picks in the second round.

The business administration major from Detroit has played against Campy Russell. I try to do what the coach wants me to do and to the job to the best of my ability," said Roundfield. In the game which decided the Mid-American Conference championship, Roundfield scored 18 points, had 19 rebounds and had nine blocked shots against Bowling Green's Cornelius Cash, who was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks. Roundfield a solid defensive player, plans to work on his game this summer against the likes of Dave Bing, Spencer Haywood and Bob Lanier. LPGA tournament At.

Among the 12 players Cleveland selected was Andre McCarter, a superb playmaker at UCLA who is a senior, but has one more year of eligibility. Fitch's doubts that he will avail himself to the pros. but it was worth the gamble in the eighth round. Fitch said up to Wednesday night that no trade involving the Cavaliers was imminent, but he received a call from the Warriors Thursday morning.

The trade was consumated at 12:15 p.m., less than two hours before the player lottery began on an 18-city conference call. "We hate to see Dwight go," said Fitch. "'He's a helluva kid. And it hurts us even more because we haven't been able to tell him. He's a at the player's meeting in Rio de Janeiro "Dwight is going to a pretty good basketball team and he may be the backup forward there like Bill Bridges was this past season." Davis was injured late last season and then lost his starting job at strong forward to Jim Brewer.

Lambert averaged 14.2 points per: game last season while grabbing 266 re- from the floor and 69 percent from the foul line. "This draft was based on added Fitch. "I'm positive we'll get something out of it. However, for some teams, the draft won't end for 30 days. Looking at the list I see some trades.

Some teams drafted with this in mind." There were several interesting picks, which included two high school seniors, one player from Russia and some hardship cases. Bill Willoughby, a 6-9 forward from a New Jersey high school, was picked in the second round by the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia selected Darryle Dawkins, a 6-10 high schooler from Florida in the first round. Both scholastic stars are confident they can make it in the NBA. Moses Malone, the high school star of a year ago who went to the ABA's Utah Stars, was a standout in his first year of pro ball. Interestingly; both Detroit and Chicago tried to draft Malone Thursday, but the NBA brass wouldn't allow it.

The Russian, Alexander Belov is a 6-7 forward from Leningrad picked by New Orleans in the 10th round. Coy, a sophom*ore at Baldwin-Wallace College, was running in the meter steeplechase event of the NCAA Division III track and field championships at B-W when he fell in the water pit at the north end of the Finnie Stadium track. Coy fell in on the third of eight laps around the track. Although startled, he up and was 10 yards down the track before he realized his left shoe was still floating in the pit. "I went back and put my shoe on as fast as I could, because there was no way I could have finished the race without it," said Coy. With the spill, Coy fell back in the pack of 15 battling for the eight places qualifying in the heat for the finals, which will be at 2 p.m.
