Aloha and welcome to the Hawaiian & Pacific Collections
The Hawaiian and Pacific Collections are internationally recognized research collections. All formats, languages and levels of treatment are collected. Many of the items in the collections are unique and irreplaceable. The Hawaiian and Pacific Collections include manuscripts and archives such as Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association (HSPA) Plantation Archives, Dole Corporation Archives, and Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands Archives.
The Hawaiian & Pacific Collections have their own reference service, circulation service and hours. Many services vary from the general Library procedures.

How to find Hawaiian & Pacific Collections books
Hawaiian & Pacific Collections books are listed in Hawai'i Voyager, the UH System Libraries online catalog. Hawaiian & Pacific Collections books have the following locations:
UH Manoa: Hamilton Hawaiian
UH Manoa: Hamilton Pacific
In order to preserve this valuable collection for present and future use, materials are housed in closed stacks. Paging service is available whenever the department is open. Selected heavily used books and current issues of popular newspapers and periodicals are in the Reading Room.
Copies of many Hawaiian and Pacific books are also available in the general collection of Hamilton Library. Audiovisual materials are located in the audiovisual center in Sinclair Library. Microforms are located in the Hamilton microforms room.

Anyone (with a photo ID) may use Hawaiian and Pacific Collections materials in our Reading Room. A current and registered UH Library card/ID is required to borrow books.
Use the following to determine what form of identification you need to bring with you.
UHM faculty, staff and students | Current activated UHM ID or UH System ID. Your card must be registered in order to borrow materials. |
UHM night school students | Current UHM fee slip and a photo ID. Your card must be registered in order to borrow materials. |
UH System faculty and students | UH ID or UH System ID (bring a photo ID if your UH ID card does not have a photo). Your card must be registered in order to borrow materials. |
East West Center program participants | East West Center card (bring a photo ID if your EWC card does not have a photo). Your card must be registered in order to borrow materials. |
Non-UH affiliated users holding the following Library borrower's cards: | UHM Library card and a photo ID |
All others | Photo ID (materials may only be used in the Hawaiian & Pacific Collections reading room) |
For your convenience, material may be requested online at any time and from any computer with an internet connection.
For each book, submit an online request through Hawai'i Voyager.
Paging service is available whenever the department is open. Books are ready to pick up 10-15 minutes after submitting request. Books will be held for you at the circulation counter for 3 days (and up to 7 days upon request).
Present your UH Library card/ID or a photo ID to the circulation counter when picking up books. All books are charged to your UH Library account for room use only.

The Hawaiian & Pacific Collections have their own circulation counter. Many services differs from the main circulation service.
CHARGE | A current and registered UH Library card/ID is required to borrow books. Duplicate copies of selected books may circulate out of the Library for 14 days, after which they may be renewed one time, for a total one-month loan period. (See RENEWAL below for instructions on this process.) Books that do not circulate include copy 1 of each book/edition, rare books, manuscripts, archives, reference, serials, journals, magazines, class holds and selected older or fragile books. To learn if an item may be charged out of the Library, please check at the Circulation Counter. |
RENEWAL | Loans may be extended if items are not recalled or placed on hold for another user. Books may be renewed two ways: bring book to Hawaiian & Pacific Collections Circulation or renew online through Hawai'i Voyager (through the My Account page). Renewals will not be accepted via telephone, fax or e-mail. Items may be renewed one time. After this initial renewal, items must be returned to the library. |
RETURN | Books may be returned to Hawaiian & Pacific Collections or the main book return/drop on the first floor after hours. |
FINES and FEES | To facilitate the prompt return of library materials, overdue fines will be assessed at the following rate: Fines are computed daily, including weekends and holidays. There is no grace period. When the overdue fine reaches $10 (maximum), the item is considered lost. Then an additional processing fee of $10 is assessed PLUS the cost of replacing the material (the minimum item replacement fee is currently at $60). Overdue fine payments may be made at the Hamilton Library or Sinclair Library Business Offices. |

How to get to the Hawaiian & Pacific Collections in Hamilton Library
The Hawaiian & Pacific Collections is located on the 5th floor of the main building of Hamilton Library in room 501. See Hamilton Library floor plan. General information about the UH Manoa Libraries.
Locate Hamilton Library on the campus map.
Visitor parking information. The closest visitor parking lot is next to Kennedy Theater (Monday thru Friday before 4:00 PM). After 4:00 PM and on Saturday, Sunday and Holidays, visitors may park in any parking area.
Hawaiian & Pacific Collections Reading Room
The Reading Room is a quiet, pleasant area conducive to serious research and study. Please report any problems to a Librarian.
The Reading Room is a wireless internet site UH System Library users. University of Hawaii faculty, staff, researchers and students who bring their own laptops equipped with wireless cards may access the campus network. Wireless FAQ.
Most books (except Rare Books, fragile, or tightly bound books) may be photocopied in accordance with current copyright laws. Coin-operated copy machines are available. A public-use scanner is also available; scanning is free, but a thumb-drive is required to save the digital files. (Thumb-drives are available for purchase from the library's first floor business office.)
All bags must be stored in lockers. Bags, backpacks, briefcases and cellular phones are not allowed in the Reading Room. Coin-operated lockers are available. Bring a quarter to use lockers (you will get your quarter back when finished).
Hawaiian & Pacific Collections has its own display area in the Reading Room. New displays are set up throughout the year.
