Important Holiday Schedule Information for Trash and Recycling Disposal, Recycle Center, and Yard Waste Facility

Lieutenant Matthew Simons from Newburyport Police Dept. · 26 May

TRASH AND CURBSIDE RECYLING COLLECTION
Due to the Memorial Day Holiday, trash and recycling pick-up will be delayed by one day, all week. Residents with Monday pick-up will have pick-up on Tuesday, May 30, residents who typically have Tuesday pick-up will have pick-up on Wednesday, the 31st, and so on. Friday residents will have pick-up on Saturday, June 3. The Downtown District, however, will have Friday pick-up, as usual.

Looking ahead, Independence Day falls on a Tuesday this year, so folks on Monday routes for trash and recycling will have no delay, but everyone else’s pickup will be delayed by one day.

THE MUNICIPAL YARD WASTE FACILITY
will NOT be affected by the Memorial Day Holiday. It will be open on Saturday, May 27 and Tuesday, May 30, as usual. The Yard Waste Facility is open Tuesday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

To get your Yard Waste Facility sticker: Order a sticker from the City website, starting at the home page (click on the circle “Make a Payment”), or click here: Order a Yard Waste sticker Then look for “Yard Waste Stickers”. The sticker gives residents access to the Yard Waste Facility through the second weekend in December.

THE RECYCLING CENTER
which is usually open Mondays and Thursdays from 12:15 to 2:15, will be CLOSED on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29.

The first-Saturday-of-June is coming up, however, so the Recycling Center will be open from 8 am until 12 pm on Saturday, June 3.

Looking ahead, Independence Day will push the Saturday drop-off day at the Recycle Center until the second Saturday, which is July 8.

Thank you and enjoy the long weekend.
Molly

Trash and Recycling Delay Due to Storm

Lieutenant Matthew Simons from Newburyport Police Dept. · 1 Feb 21

Newburyport Trash and Recycling Delay for the week of Feb. 1

Newburyport : CHANGE IN TRASH COLLECTION SCHEDULE: Due to this week’s snow storm, trash and recycling collection will be delayed by one day all week. There will be no trash or recycling collection on Tuesday, February 2.

Areas of Newburyport which normally get pick-ups on Tuesday will have trash and recycling collection on Wednesday. Wednesday will be Thursday and so forth. Friday’s schedule is shifted to Saturday, except for the downtown area with Friday collection. Downtown collection will be on Friday, as usual.

Please put barrels where they will not impede traffic. If necessary, shovel out where they are usually placed or put them on top of the snow if it will not interfere with snow plow activity.

Presidents Day, Monday, February 20, is NOT a holiday for trash and recycling collection - there will be NO delay due to the holiday.

The City places Code Red calls in the case of a delay of trash/recycling collection. You can also check the City website for any collection changes under News and Announcements.

If you haven’t signed up for Code Red phone calls, or e-Alerts, you may want to do so. On the City’s home page, click on the small “Code Red” symbol at the bottom of the page. For email alerts, click on the gray button “Notify Me,” also on the home page.

Thank you for the extra effort needed to keep things running, and especially for helping out your neighbors.

Trash and Recycling Info

Lieutenant Matthew Simons from Newburyport Police Dept. · 22 May 20

Important Holiday Schedule Information for Trash and Recycling Disposal, Dumpsters on Low Street, and Yard Waste Facility

Newburyport –Due to the Memorial Day Holiday, trash and recycling pick-up will be delayed by one day, all week. Residents with Monday pick-up will have pick-up on Tuesday, May 26, residents who typically have Tuesday pick-up will have pick-up on Wednesday, the 27th, and so on. Friday residents will have pick-up on Saturday, May 30. The Downtown District, however, will have Friday pick-up, as usual.

Looking ahead, Independence Day falls on a Saturday this year, so there will be no delays of trash or recycling pick-ups this year for that holiday.

The trash and recycling dumpsters at the Emergency Operations Center, 59 Low Street, will be removed after 3 p.m. on Friday, May 22. Those dumpsters were in place due to the short-term requirement to have all trash items in a barrel. That requirement expires Tuesday, May 26. If you can, please put cardboard in your recycling cart for automated collection. If not you may resume flattening, bundling, and tying or taping cardboard, and placing it next to your recycle barrel, for collection by Mello Disposal. Also, please keep social distance from Mello staff.

The Municipal Yard Waste Facility on Colby Farm Lane will NOT be affected by the Memorial Day Holiday. It will be open on Saturday, May 23 and Tuesday, May 26, as usual. The Yard Waste Facility is open Tuesday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

NEW: This year, stickers may be ordered from the City website, starting at the home page (click on the circle “Online Services”). No stickers will be sold at the Yard Waste site. A Yard Waste sticker gives residents access to the Yard Waste Facility through the first weekend in December.

Covid-19 Trash and Yard Waste Update

Lieutenant Matthew Simons from Newburyport Police Dept. · 2 Apr 20

April 1, 2020

Yard Waste Facility
· In the spirit of doing as much as we can to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Newburyport will not open the Yard Waste Facility on Colby Farm Lane on April 7, and we do not anticipate opening it until sometime in May. We understand that with many people already having cleaned up their yards, moving the opening date back further is a great disappointment.

Leaf Pick-up
Curbside leaf pick-up is planned for Saturday, May 2 and Saturday, May 16.If this changes we will let you know.
Please have bagged leaves, or leaves in barrels, out by 7 a.m. Please fold bags over at the top.
Trash and Recycling

As of Monday, March 23, residents and downtown businesses must put trash in plastic bags, and put the bags in barrels, with nothing loose in the barrel.
If someone in your household may be infected with COVID-19 (or anything else contagious) all personal waste should be double-bagged in plastic bags, sealed, and put in barrels.
There will be NO large item/ bulk trash pick-up at this time.
Cardboard must be inside barrels (or see below).
If you have large pieces of cardboard, or don’t have a barrel for trash, there’s an option.
There are two temporary dumpsters, for trash and recycling only, at 59 Low Street, for residents only. This is the site of Emergency Operations Center, not the National Guard building, and is across the street from the Nock/Molin School. The site will be opened from 12 - 3 pm Monday- Friday and will be staffed. Only household trash and recycling is allowed, no construction debris or contractor bags, no bulk items, no metal or white goods, no tires, and no hazardous waste.

Recycling Center
The recycling center on Colby Farm Lane will NOT be open on Mondays or Thursdays from 12.15-2.15 p.m. until we return to the normal schedule, tentatively Monday, May 5.
The recycling center on Colby Farm Lane will NOT be open the first Saturday of April. We are tentatively planning to reschedule the drop-off for the first Saturday of May, May 2 (8 am – 12 pm).
Mattress and Box Spring Pick-up
While mattresses cannot currently be picked up as trash, the non-profit UTEC will come to Newburyport on Tuesday, April 28 for curbside pick-up of mattresses and box springs at a cost of $15 apiece. They will be dismantled for component recycling.
Call the Health Department to make arrangements at 978-465-4410, ext. 1.
Food/Organics Waste

UNCHANGED is the opportunity to get compostables picked up:
Newburyporters have a very attractive subscription curbside organics option. Please contact our service provider, Black Earth Compost at 978.290.4610 for current rates and collection day for your area. (And note! Meats, fats, dairy and bones are welcome in curbside collection!)

For additional information please see the City of Newburyport website, or call 978-465-4410, ext. 1, or e-mail us at Lhanke@cityofnewburyport.com. Staff members can send needed information via email, fax, or postal mail.

Covid-19 Trash and Yard Waste Update

Lieutenant Matthew Simons from Newburyport Police Dept. · 22 Mar 20

Effective immediately, all trash and recycling must be in barrels for curbside pick-up.

Any trash left on the curb for city collection must be in bags and within a barrel. Trash is collected manually. Therefore for the safety of the workers, barrels must be used for trash collection. Any trash left on the curb that is not in a barrel will not be picked up. There will also be no large item/ bulk trash pick-up at this time.

Recycling collection is semi-automated so recycling can be loose in the barrel but again no loose material outside the barrel.

If you have large pieces of cardboard or don’t have a barrel for trash there are options.

Tomorrow Mello will place two dumpsters, one for trash and one for recycling, at 59 Low Street, for residents only. This is the site of Emergency Operations Center not the National Guard building and is across the street from the Nock Molin School. The site will be monitored.

Additionally, the Mello Transfer Station in Georgetown is open for drop off of trash and recycling, 7 days a week. https://www.mellodisposal.com/transfer-s...

Be well and thank you for your help and understanding. For additional information please see the City’s web site at www.cityofnewburyport.com.

Holiday Trash Collection, December and January Recycling Drop-off and Disposal of Christmas Trees

Lieutenant Matthew Simons from Newburyport Police Dept. · 19 Dec 19

December 17, 2019

Newburyport - Holiday trash collection, December and January recycling drop-off and disposal of Christmas Trees

Trash and recycling collection routes for Wednesdays through Fridays will be delayed by one day during the weeks of December 23 and December 30. For those whose usual day for trash and/or recycling is Wednesday, collection will be Thursday, December 26 and Thursday, January 2; and routes normally done on Thursdays will be pushed to Friday. Friday routes will be picked up on Saturday, except for the downtown district, which will have their usual pick-up early Friday morning.

The Recycling Center will be open on Saturday, January 4, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. It is open on most Mondays and Thursdays, as well, from 12:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m but is weather dependent. Please call the Health Department at 978-465-4410 to confirm it is open.

Items that you can drop off include white packing Styrofoam, anything with a cord or batteries, rechargeable batteries, lithium batteries, button cell batteries, cords, fluorescent bulbs, bicycles, appliances (large and small), tires, anything that is mostly metal (including grills, lawn mowers, patio tables/chairs, file cabinets, pots, pans), antifreeze, motor oil, and cooking oil.

Some items have fees for drop-off. They include TVs, monitors, printers, VCRs, DVD players, dehumidifiers, ACs, tires, microwaves, and large kitchen and laundry appliances.
Regarding Christmas tree disposal –if you put your Christmas tree at the curb by Thursday, January 16, Newburyport will save considerably on the cost of disposal, and the Newbury Volunteer Fire Department will benefit. G. Mello, the City’s trash and recycling haulers, will take the trees to the Tendercrop growing fields to be used in the Old Newbury Fire Department’s annual fundraiser Bonfire https://www.facebook.com/events/48167036.... This is a win-win situation in that the City won’t have to pay for the trees to be hauled to the incinerator in North Andover.

Please do not bag the trees and remove bases, tinsel and lights.
After January 19, G. Mello trucks will collect Christmas trees along with the trash. They will continue that service through the month of January.

If you need any additional information please see the Recycling and Energy page on the City of Newburyport website, or call the Health Department at 978-465-4410 or Mello Disposal at 978-352-8581. For questions: lhanke@cityofnewburyport.com , or call 978-465-4410

Bagged Leaf Collection, Veteran's Day, and Yard Waste Facility Hours

Lieutenant Matthew Simons from Newburyport Police Dept. · 28 Oct 19

October 28, 2019

BAGGED LEAF COLLECTION, COLBY FARM LANE YARD WASTE FACILITY HOURS

The Curbside bagged leaf collection will take place on Saturdays: November 2, November 23, and December 14. Residents must place leaves in brown paper leaf bags or in marked barrels. Please fold over the tops of the bags to minimize the amount of leaves spilling out. Bags must be curbside by 6:00 AM and contain only leaves or pumpkins. Note: bags containing branches, plants, dirt, rocks or trash will be left behind.

Composting pumpkins rather than putting them in the trash benefits the city and the environment. You may place them in your leaf bag or backyard compost, drop them off at the Yard Waste Facility (no sticker needed), or, if you’re a subscriber to Black Earth Compost, include it in your green curbside bucket.

Note that Veteran’s Day does not affect the trash or recycling collection schedules.

As a reminder, the Newburyport Yard Waste Facility is open six days a week at this time of year, on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 7:30a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Anticipated final date of the year is Sunday, December 8, weather permitting.

If you haven’t done so already, consider signing up for announcements or urgent alerts from any or all City departments. On the City of Newburyport’s website homepage, click on the round gray button labeled “Notify Me,” and/or the “Code Red” near the bottom of the page.

For additional information please see the City of Newburyport website, or call 978-465-4410, ext. 1, or e-mail us at Lhanke@cityofnewburyport.com.
