David Busst's leg now 28 years on from vile break in Man Utd vs Coventry (2024)

The state of David Busst's leg 28 years on from his horror leg break has left fans shell-shocked.

The life of the former Coventry City defender changed forever in 1996 in a Premier League game against Manchester United. Only 87 seconds after kick-off, the game was marred by horrendously gruesome scenes.

After a header was parried into the path of Busst by United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, the centre back rushed to strike the ball but in turn was caught in a collision with both Denis Irwin and Brian McClair who attempted to block his shot.

The challenge saw Busst's right leg instantly shattered with the shape of his leg noticeably deformed as his team-mates and rivals alike realised the horror that had just occurred. The Englishman was left screaming on the grass before he was carried off the pitch in what was the last game of his career.

His career was cruelly stolen from him as he opened up about the trauma of the injury prior to Manchester United's thrilling FA Cup semi-final clash against Coventry on Sunday (April 21), which the Red Devils won 4-2 on penalties after drawing 3-3 and throwing away a three-goal lead.

"I remember screaming out, I remember while screaming, the pain not going away. I remember just seeing Dion Dublin on his haunches with a look on his face I'll never forget, it was just horror," he said to BBC Sport.

"It landed perfectly for me inside the six-yard box. I go for the ball and the next thing I'm lying flat on my back. I must have been in shock because I was in this enormous pain and I didn't want to move", before adding: "I couldn't hear 50,000 fans applauding me above the noise of my own screams".

Almost three decades since the injury, Busst has been the long-standing football community manager at Coventry, a role he's had since 2003, where he's headed the club's progress in aspects of inclusion, diversity, and education.

He said: "I took over as head of community in 2003 and we became a registered charity five years later. Everything changed from bibs, balls and cones to health and wellbeing, education and employability, inclusion and diversity - using the brand of Coventry City to raise aspirations".

Images of his right leg were posted on social media with fans astounded at the state of his leg and even more so at the fact that the 56-year-old still plays with football with local side Leamington Veterans.

One fan on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: "To survive this and still plays football is something else" while another added: "It's a miracle".
