52 Reasons Why I Love You: Free Printable Q&A Journal for Couples (1)

During the first year of our marriage, I made love notes for my husband’s lunch or left sticky notes with love confessions all over the house. I like expressing my feelings with words (hence theblog!), so it seemed like a natural part of our relationship. Then we had children and started measuring couple time in naps, so I couldn’t do it as often. But February is a special time for us. Not only there is Valentine’s Day, but also our anniversary. It makes me remember the first days of our courtship and all the adventures we have hadsince, from escaping the burning hotel on our wedding day to moving across the continent twice.

Our story isn’t all that unusual. Well, maybe the burning hotel is, but every couple has a story of how they met, what they liked about each other and all the great adventures they had together. And I think that every one of those stories is amazing. So I made a journal of prompts to get these stories written down. When making it, I was thinking of my husband – those early days of love notes and what I’d like to tell him now. I know so much more about him and about us. So I decidedto make this journal for him to give on our anniversary, and I’d be happy if you did the same for someone you love!

This journal with its fifty two questions is fifty two ways to say “I love you because…” While going through the questions, you can:

  • reminisceabout the past (“My earliest memory of you” and “When I first started liking you”)
  • choose the best of the bests (“The most amazing thing we’ve done together” and “The cheapest and simplest fun we’ve ever had”)
  • createa time capsule of the current times (“Last time we didn’t act our age” and “Last gift you gave to me”)
  • point out little things that make you happy (“A song that reminds me of you” and “Little ways in which you make me smile”)
  • imagine unlikely but fun situations (“Ifsomeone made a movie about us” and “If I could give you anything in the world”)
  • and even plan for the future (“One day, I’d like to try this with you” and “Our happily-ever-after includes”).

I’m planning it as a gift. But there are two sides to each page as there are two sides to each questions, so that my husband could have his say later. That’s right, it’s a journal for two people, so if you don’t do it as a surprise, you can alsofill it in casually together. Pick a time during the day when you can sit down and write your answers. Read them aloud. Discuss them, remember happy times, enjoy each other’s presence. If you do it once a week, the journal will last for exactly a year. Fifty two questions for fifty two weeks.

Finally, nothing needs stop you from taking the opportunity to fill it all out at once – we like filling journals like this while travelling! On a long ride we can sometimes go through several questions, while other times we will start discussing one and it will act as a conversation starter, distracting us into a long philosophical conversationthat is always welcome when you are driving across the continent.

One thing is for sure; it is fun to look through the journals a few years later! And if you make a surprise, it’samazing to see the eyes of your partner when he’s reading the answers for the first time.

While not pertinent to the journal, I feel like after teasing you with the story of the burning hotel, I should tell it in full before finishing to the post. We were planning toour honeymoon in France the day after getting married, but forour wedding nightwe had rented a little historical cottage in the forest. We thought it would be a romantic retreat from civilization. It was bitterly cold when we arrived, but the strings of lights on the old stone mill and 18th C farmstead looked so lovely. We quickly hid inside our little cottage and started afire in the fireplace. We thought we would explore more tomorrow.

We woke up in the morning, very cold. The fire was out,and there was no electricity. Come to think of it, no hot water either. We tried calling the administration and found that the phone wasn’t working, either. Then one of us looked out of the window, and we saw this enormous cloud of smoke raising from the main building. I don’t think I’ve ever packed so quickly in my life! From where we were, it was hard to say where the smoke was coming from. I was concerned about the rental car that we left by the main building. The wilderness of our location suddenly didn’t seem so romantic anymore.

In the end, it turned out that the car was alright. It took us a couple of hours to start it, in that bitter frost and without electricity, with the help of locals. No one was hurt, though the hotel was quite badly destroyed. It wasn’t quite as peaceful a timeas we had hoped, but it has made for an exciting story!

This isone of the stories I’m going to write down in our journal, along with many others. Now I can laugh about it, and I hope you’ll have many pleasant moments while writing in it and reading it.
